When Does One-Sided Headache Occur?
One-sided headache is very common and the most well-known reason is migraine, most severe case is cluster headache. Trigeminal neuralgia also causes one-sided headache but it is usually in the form of flashes and electrifications. Also there are more rare cases like primer stabbing headache and in elderly people temporal arthritis.
One-Sided Headache Diseases
Küme baş ağrısı için tek taraflı, migren içinse yarım baş ağrısı tanımlaması daha uygundur. Usually, migraine causes pain on one half of the head but this half may change from time to time. Patient may feel the pain on the left one day and on the right on another. But persistent one-sided headache, although possible with migraine as well, is a typical cluster headache symptom. If your headache is severe and is always on the same side, and around the eye and the temple; also if it is repeating periodically in certain times of the year or the day, and you are a young man, you should definitely consider cluster headache. (But this does not mean if you are an old man or a woman, either young or old, this cannot happen to you. It can.)
In the definition of migraine, the explanation ‘throbbing pain on one side’ is used as typical but there are also cases where the patient suffers from pain on the whole head, or even just nausea and vomiting without pain.
If you are an old man, suffering from one-sided persistent temple pain, also if you feel a stiffness on the vein on your temple, you may have temporal arthritis (giant cell arthritis). Please consult a physician immediately.
