The Symptoms of Neck Hernia
Neck hernia is the tearing of the cushions in between vertebral bones (disc). These discs contain a dark gelatinous substance in the sheath. They stretch in every movement of the spine and prevent the bones from rubbing against each other and the nerves, which travel down the arms by passing through the bones from squeezing. If there is a tear in the sheath of the disc, intense gelatinous material overflows, which tightens the nerves going down the arms.
Tearing in the disc causes spasms in the muscles around the spinal cord. Neck movements are painful. The muscles around the spinal cord harden and get very painful.
- Numbness spreading to the arm occurs. The numbness can spread to the whole arm or can occur in partial sections of the arm.
- Weakness occurs in the arm. It cannot perform certain functions.
- If the disc is torn in the middle and compresses the spine directly, it may be difficult to urinate or in some occasions the bladder may not empty completely.
Treatment of Neck Hernia
Surgical and drug treatments, physiotherapy and exercises are applied in treatment approaches. Surgery can be performed especially in hernias. Surgery should be preferred if the cervical disk herniation compresses nerves going to the arm and the functions of these nerves are affected. In some cases, a fragment may break free and float in the spinal canal. In this case, surgery should be considered even if the nerve is not exposed to too much pressure.
Surgery is a method preferred only in 1 out of 10 patients among all patients with neck hernia.
Some patients’ symptoms improve thanks to medical treatment, physiotherapy and the body healing itself with time. The underlying cause of common degenerations which we can call as hernia and arthritis is hematoma (blood build up). Especially muscle spasms occurring all over the spine and the mechanical compression caused by the spine carrying the body’s weight reduces the supply of blood to the spinal column, which reduces the body’s capacity of self-renewal and self-healing.
Speeding up the healing process by increasing the blood supply to the spine can only be provided by neural therapy. For this reason, neural therapy should be used in all back-lower back-neck problems. Neural therapy on its own cannot provide long term solution in patients with neck hernia.
In the treatment with Gokmen Approach, neural therapy and body balance regulation are performed. Successful and long term results can be obtained.
